Kauai's North Shore Beaches
The beaches of Kauai’s North Shore are beautiful, and generally, the beaches on the North Shore are calmer during the summer months of August and September.
However, you do need to be cautious, because the surf here is stronger than on the Shore Shore.
Here is a listing of the North Shore beaches you may want to visit with a short summary of each one.
Aliomanu Beach boasts one of the longest and widest fringing reefs on Kauai . You’ll find the locals use this beach for everything from fishing to seaweed harvesting.
Anahola Beach Park beach, because of the protective shore reef, has excellent swimming most of the year. The sandy beach is shaded and ideal if you have children. The off shore reef is a great place for snorkeling or for the more adventurous - scuba diving..
Anini Beach is one of the most protected beaches along the North Shore. A fringed reef runs the entire length of beach and its Hawaii's longest reef. Snorkeling is good in the shallow water and the swimming is the best and safest on the North Shore.
Ha’ena beach is a beautiful beach, however because there is no reef to slow down the surf, swimming can be treacherous. Surfing here is only for more experienced surfers.
Are you old enough to remember the movie “South Pacific?” This is the beach where Mitzi Gaynor, “washed that man right out of my hair.”
Lumaha’i beach is a long, sandy, picture-perfect beach. However, if swimming is what you’re looking for – don’t do it here! The strong currents, fierce waves, and incredible backwash make the swimming dangerous almost all the time.
Hanalei Bay is ringed with a white sand beach, which is gorgeous to look at, but less than ideal for swimming. Now if surfing is your prime beach activity. . . then you’re in the right place.
The next four beaches are all part of Hanalei Bay.
Snorkeling out ways swimming here, because of the shallow water.
You’ll only want to attempt swimming here when the seas are calm. To dangerous on anything but calm days.
Into Boogie Boarding? Surfing? Both sports are better here than swimming.
If you’re into kayaking, join those who put in here to go up the Hanalei River. Swimming isn’t the best, but boogie boarding is decent near the pier area.
