Kauai's East Shore Beaches
The East Shore of Kauai is known as the Coconut Coast and is where the majority of Kauai population lives today. Below is a short overview of the primary East Shore Beaches of Kauai with links to more information.
Donkey Beach is a secluded beach, but well worth finding because of its lovely strand of sand and trees.
Opinions differ on how the beach got its name. One story says locals named it in the 1960's others say it got its name because the nearby plantations used donkeys and burros to haul cane to the fields.
Just watch for strong currents and the sudden drop offs. As well as waves breaking on the ledge.
If you're old enough, you just might recognize Hanama'ulu from the 1963 John Wayne film, "Donovan's Reef."
If not, you just might enjoy that it's one of the only places where you can camp in Kauai.
The swiming is good because of an interesting series of lagoons, as well as a beautiful woody area bordering the stream. Just watch for sharks.
Hanama'ulu Beach is the favorite hangout of locals on weekends to relax and frolic in the sand and sun.
This beach is a great place for learning how to surf, boogie board, bodysurf or windsurf. With its partial proctection from the ocean by a break wall, it's the ideal place to relax, sunbath or watch outriggers and cruise ships pull in and out of Nawiliwili Harbor.
Right in Kapa'a this park is heavily used by locals, which makes it more crowded and not as clean because there are no facilities.
Now with that said, it does have a swimming pool, because of the beaches frequent high surf and strong currents. On windy days you'll see kite surfers, because kites can really fly when the wind is up.
This popular surf and boogie boarding beach has strong waves and current. They can be ferocious on windy days so leave this one to the pros and only swim on calm days.
